Presentado el trabajo: Study of efficiency for heritage documentation from image and range based information. A case study for the Church of San Martín in Segovia, en el congres Le Vie dei Mercanti, en la edición del 2012.

Objetivo General: Evaluar la eficiencia de la técnica fotogramétricas: “Dense Stereo Matching” para la documentación del Patrimonio Arquitectónico-Urbano.

Objetivos Específicos:

  1. Plantear las bases conceptuales y metodológicas que soportan la técnica fotogramétrica de documentación “Dense Stereo Matching” y el Escáner Láser como punto de comparación.
  2. Comparar los datos obtenidos de la técnica fotogramétrica “Dense Stereo Matching” contra los obtenidos a partir del Escáner Láser.
  3. Evaluar el grado de eficiencia de la técnica “Dense Stereo Matching”.

Existe un nuevo sistema de dibujar, que esperamos que no se haya quedado obsoleto en el tiempo que ha pasado, desde que escribimos estas líneas hasta que han sido impresas. Dado que hemos expresado que es un sistema “nuevo”, todos han sobreentendido que viene de la mano de las nuevas tecnologías. Nos estamos refiriendo a lo que se conoce como la “nube de puntos” y es precisamente este juego de palabras, el que da título a nuestra presentación: “el dibujo por las nubes”

Presentación de Uvacad en el congreso anual de usuarios de Optech Ilris3d

Presentamos los últimos avances de nuestra plataforma de software para el procesamiento de nubes de puntos 3D, desde su presentación en la anterior reunión de usuarios del ILRIS en Milán. Entonces hablábamos de UVACAD como un conjunto de herramientas integradas en forma de módulos compartiendo una misma estructura de datos y un núcleo o “kernel” que soporta las funciones compartidas como el acceso al hardware, operaciones de lectura-escritura, interface gráfico, etc. Nuestra intención actual es ponerlo a disposición vía web para instituciones académicas y grupos de investigación de forma gratuita, o se ofrecerá en el marco de un contrato o convenio para empresas y profesionales en la forma que requiera cada caso particular.

Los paquetes comerciales más reconocidos como Polyworks, Rapidform, o Reconstructor son sin duda más potentes y versátiles, pero tienen un coste que puede resultar insoportable para los presupuestos de pequeños grupos de investigación y consumen un porcentaje demasiado elevado de los beneficios de los proyectos de aplicación que deben sostener la actividad de I+D+I pura. La necesidad hace virtud y por ello UVACAD va adquiriendo funciones que tienden a dotarlo de autonomía al tiempo que su orientación hacia temas relacionados con el patrimonio arquitectónico y arqueológico ahorra esfuerzos en la implementación de funciones poco o nada útiles en este campo y en cambio se intenta incrementar al máximo la compatibilidad con formatos estándar y la capacidad de importar/exportar datos 3D (nubes de puntos o mallas y ficheros de CAD) y 2D (imágenes) de distintos dispositivos.

La gran cantidad de aplicaciones sobre Geometría Computacional y Visión Computacional que pueden encontrarse en Internet es muy diversa; sus formatos de entrada y salida son también muy heterogéneos. Y, aunque estas herramientas son muy útiles y algunas de ellas están muy desarrolladas, la interoperabilidad presenta importantes deficiencias. En ocasiones, no es posible utilizar herramientas que presentan propósitos similares o bien el esfuerzo requerido para su integración es muy elevado. Para los propósitos de la aplicación se requiere minimizar el tiempo de desarrollo de un interfaz de visualización apropiado, la comprensión de la librería y minimizar el coste de integración con otras librerías de visualización y análisis para entornos 3D, todo ello prestando una especial atención al principal contexto de explotación previsto: edificios y entornos urbanos.

L’oggetto di questo intervento sono gli ultimi progressi del nostro software per il processamento di nuvole di punti 3D, rispetto a quanto presentato in occasione della precedente riunione di utenti Ilris a Milano. In quell’occasione abbiamo descritto UVACAD come un insieme di applicazioni integrate, sotto forma di moduli, operanti su una stessa base di dati e gestite da un nucleo o “kernel” che supporta le funzioni condivise come l’accesso all’hardware, le operazioni lettura-scrittura, l’interfaccia grafica, ecc…. Attualmente il nostro intento è mettere a disposizione la piattaforma in forma totalmente gratuita, per università e gruppi di ricerca o, attraverso un contratto, da stipulare nella maniera opportuna per ogni singolo caso, per le imprese e i professionisti.

I pacchetti commerciali più conosciuti come Poliworks, Rapidform, o Reconstructor, sono senza dubbio più potenti e versatili, ma hanno un costo che può incidere pesantemente nei bilanci dei piccoli gruppi di ricerca e assorbire quindi una percentuale eccessiva degli utili prodotti dai loro progetti applicativi, che rappresentano la principale fonte di finanziamento dell’attività di R&D.

Di necessità si fa virtù, e per questo motivo il software UVACAD è indirizzato allo sviluppo di funzioni che mirano a renderlo autonomo; infatti, considerando anche il suo orientamento verso temi legati al patrimonio architettonico e archeologico, i programmatori hanno tralasciato momentaneamente l’implementazione di funzioni poco utili in questi campi a favore di un sempre maggiore incremento della compatibilità con formati standard e della possibilità di importare/esportare dati 3D (nuvole di punti o mesh e file CAD) e 2D (immagini) con diverse estensioni e quindi da e verso varie tipologie di software.

Un altro aspetto riguarda la grande quantità e varietà di applicativi nell’ambito della Geometria e Visione Computazionale che si possono trovare in internet. Tali applicativi presentano spesso formati di importazione ed esportazione tra loro eterogenei, rendendone difficoltosa la reciproca interoperabilità ed il loro uso in un medesimo ambito operativo, nonostante siano singolarmente molto utili e in alcuni casi ben sviluppati. A questo proposito la piattaforma UVACAD ha come obbiettivo quello di offrire a potenziali sviluppatori un contesto unificato nell’ambito del quale poter fruire di forme avanzate di integrazione e “dialogo”, eliminando in questo modo ogni sforzo inutile e non necessario.

Recovering Colour and Volume from Relics in Restoration tasks

Shape Analysis is a crucial aspect before planning and executing conservation or restoration tasks. Image- and range-based approaches are the most common non-contact approaches for the shape re-cording, with regard to colour and volume. An accurate knowledge of the current status of pieces is a first need in conservation or restoration tasks. In this work, we show some results coming from different recording devices (, cameras, triangulation and time-of-flight 3d laser scanners), different methodologies (image- and range-based approaches) and their fusion in a common framework given by the software platform UvaCad. Our main contribution is the development of software tools for the joint management of geometric and radiometric dense information. The fusion and the visualization to different levels of detail is performed on a 3D support which can be modified in an interactive way by the user.We illustrate our approach with surveying and proposal interventions for old mural paintings in a wall of the church of Wamba (Valladolid, Spain). Main developed applications concern to diagnostic, monitoring and simulation of interventions for planning restoration tasks, as a component of more ad-vanced Cultural Heritage Information Systems

La información del edificio desde sistemas avanzados de información y modelos de realidad mixta

Los sistemas de información sobre edificios constituyen un enorme campo de investigación en el que se han producido varios avances a lo largo de los últimos 20 años. La mayoría de las tentativas conciernen a las distintas estrategias para integrar diversas fuentes de datos, tales como ficheros de CAD, datos alfanuméricos, levantamientos fotogramétricos, y, más recientmente, datos de scanner3D. Los metadatos relativos a todas estas fuentes, deben ser referidos a un marco común: Para comprender el edificio y su entorno y para mejorar el diseño y planificación de las acciones de intervención. Hoy día, esta integración se está logrando en el marco de Los Sistemas Avanzados de Información para Edificios adecuados de forma especial al Patrimonio Cultural, incluyendo bienes del patrimonio etnográfico. La falta de conectividad y topología de los datos es el primer problema a resolver. Por ello, nuestra primera contribución muestra con algunos ejemplos significativos nuestra propuesta para el intercambio de datos y las cuestiones de interoperabilidad entre distintos formatos. Building Information Modelling is a large framework where several approaches have been performed along last twenty years. Main approaches concern to the different strategies for including different data such as text and CAD files, photogrammetric surveying and, more recently, laser based methodologies. Furthermore metadata, all of them are considered as different kinds of inputs which must be integrated in a common framework 1) for understanding the building and its environment, and 2) for improving the design and planning of construction or intervention strategies. Nowadays, the integration is being performed in the framework of Advanced Information Systems for Buildings which are being focused towards Cultural Heritage, including Etnographic cultural goods. Lack of data connectivity and topology is a first trouble to be solved. Thus, our first contribution shows some meaningful examples and explains our approach for data interchange and interoperability issues between different kinds of formats. All of them are integrated in our UVACAD software platform.


EVALUATION OF STRUCTURAL DAMAGES FROM 3D LASER SCANS

There exists a very large amount of damaged buildings in Cultural Heritage. Common damages are related with structural deformations (lack of verticality, crashes, e.g.) and the degradation of the support (deteriorated materials, e.g.). A dense information is needed for both of them. Non-intrusive methods based in laser scans provide a 3d support with dense information with a low human cost. In this work, a special attention is paid to structural deformations. The performed methodology consists of the following steps: 1) Construction of the global model; 2) interactive selection of slices and projection of reference planes; 3) extraction of a regular sequence of longitudinal and transversal sections linked to slices which can be exported to CAD models; 4) re-projection of each regular sequence of slices on a common reference plane; 5) separation between measurements and algorithmic errors; 6) evaluation of the lack of elementary symmetries for longitudinal or transversal sections; 7) identification of pathologies by simple inspection between enough separate sections . To achieve these goals the software platform UVACAD has been developed for solving visualisation issues relative to subclouds of points extracted from the global model. Interactive visualization concerns to basic projective operations (sections and projections), cell decomposition and colour reprojection of the global 3d model. Resulting slices with constant width are regularly distributed in parallel planes; and they provide a support for a half-automatic drawing (with a graphical interface) of contours on exported orthoimages. Structural damages can be visualised in a transparent way by overlapping the exported orthoimages. These results are illustrated with an example relative to the gothic church of Villamoron (Burgos, Spain). The performed 3d model has provided an accurate surveying which has allowed the assessment for a quick intervention policy for correcting serious damages which have been observed in the precedent study.

A software platform has been developed for integrating image- and range-based information. The resulting fusion provides discrete models based on dense files of 6d points (position and colour) which have been incorporated to small and medium size urban environments. Graphical interfaces allow an interactive visualisation on resulting files, which can be sampled (blind or adaptive decimation, e.g.), subdivided by means of octrees and exported to different typical graphical or image formats. Digital Information System offer the possibility of sharing information, making remote consults and simulating effects with current and tracked data. Range-based systems arising from laser scanning provide accurate 3d models. The extraction and comparison of information relative to structural aspects is performed by applying specific tools of a software platform. Both aspects contribute to evaluate and quantify the current state and, consequently, to the assessment of risk policies. Furthermore, resulting discrete dense models support continuous superimposed structures to evaluate any kind of deformations following standard continuous or FEM-based approaches. A lot of work to be done is related to geo-database (organisation, format conversion, dissemination and accessibility), monitoring, tracking and simulation for the risks assessment of Cultural Heritage buildings and their urban/rural environments./

Mientras tanto seguimos andando un camino en el que no ocultamos que junto a la búsqueda de recursos, técnicas y métodos que permitan profundizar y mejorar el conocimiento de las edificaciones y sus comportamientos, pretendemos que, al menos en lo que a su representación se refiere, se haga de la manera automática; de forma que se evite la subjetividad que introduce el operador. Con ello no pretendemos eliminar el proceso racional y personal que, desde el análisis de los datos lleva al conocimiento, valoración e interpretación del estado del edificio, sino simplemente desarrollar herramientas de trabajo fiables capaces de derivar en representaciones de precisión y ágil consulta de las características formales y constructivas del edificio. Y, como no puede ser de otro modo, deseamos que en el camino se logre reducir el tiempo y el esfuerzo económico y humano que implican las tareas de documentación imprescindibles en los proyectos de intervención y análisis del patrimonio construido. /

Sustainability of Cultural Heritage involves both the object and the actuation framework. In both cases, it is required a multilevel approach able of taking into account the nature of different entities (materials, buildings, infrastructures) and the requirements of different agents (social, economical, and environmental). Sustainability becomes one of the most important issues for integrated policies of preservation, restoration and accessibility to the Cultural Heritage by different institutional and private agents. It is necessary to make compatible the diversity of agents and performance frameworks with requirements and goals of a sustainable policy in Cultural Heritage. In this report, we display some recent experiences performed by the DAVAP research group in regard to a sustainable policy in digitised Cultural Heritage of Castilla y León (Spain).


La sostenibilidad del patrimonio cultural incluye el objeto y el marco de actuación. En ambos casos, se requiere un enfoque multinivel capaz de tener en cuenta la naturaleza de las diferentes entidades (materiales, edificios, infraestructuras) y las exigencias de los diferentes agentes (sociales, económicos y ambientales). La sostenibilidad se convierte en uno de los temas más importantes para las políticas integradas de conservación, restauración y accesibilidad al patrimonio cultural por diferentes agentes institucionales y privados. Es necesario hacer compatible la diversidad de agentes y los marcos de actuación con los requisitos y objetivos de una política sostenible en el Patrimonio Cultural. En este informe, presentamos algunas experiencias recientes realizadas por el grupo de investigación DAVAP en lo que respecta a una política sostenible en digitalizadas del Patrimonio Cultural de Castilla y León (España).

/ In this paper an integrated approach for modeling complex archaeological sites is developed. Particularly, we describe a 3D modeling pipeline which integrates laser scanning and low-cost Photogrammetry over an emblematic Jewish tanneries situated in Avila (Spain). Due to its inherent complexity and the relevance of the archaeological site, Jewish tanneries constitute a perfect framework to put in practise our methodology: from the recording and reconstruction to the final interactive visualization. This multi-sensor approach would give the possibility to improve the quality of the models, without acquisition of extra laser scanner data, but using 2D images as additional source of 3D geometry based on a single image-based approach

Some experiences in 3D laser scanning for assisting restoration and evaluating damage in Cultural Heritage

The recent incorporation of laser devices provides advanced tools for assisting the conservation and restoration of Cultural Heritage. It is necessary to have an understanding as complete as possible of the object state before evaluating or defining the reach of the restoration process. Thus, a special effort is devoted to surveying, measuring and generating a high-resolution 3D model previous to restoration planning. This work presents some results relative to several experiments performed on damaged pieces for evaluation purposes in Cultural Heritage. Some software tools are applied for carving-work analysis, conservation-state monitoring, and simulation of weathering processes for evaluating temporal changes. In all cases considered, a high resolution information capture has been performed with a laser scanner, the Minolta 910. The application of software tools for merging different scans and information post-processing allowes the generation of very accurate models for several kinds of artistic or archaeological objects on different kinds of support. Our approach is flexible enough to be adapted to another kind of pieces or Cultural Heritage artefacts, in order to provide an assessment for intervention planning in conservation and restoration tasks.

The introduction of laser-based photogrammetry in the surveying of Cultural Heritage provides an increasing volume of data, which requires multi-resolution approaches for analyzing and displaying the 3D information. Three-dimensional laser scanning provides accurate geometric and radiometric information about buildings façades and volumetric display of bounded urban zones. In particular, it makes possible the generation of 3D models of scanned areas allowing a customized management of navigation through the data. Some complexity issues are linked to the unordered character of scanned points, making difficult the application of traditional software libraries of Computer Vision and Computer Graphics. Ordering criteria based on geometric and radiometric criteria simplify the computer management of architectural and urban primitives and allow perform a hierarchised approach by making compatible recognition tasks with different levels of detail and 3Dvisualization. The integration of geometric and radiometric information on a discrete volumetric model given by dense clouds of 3D points simplifies an interactive generation and management of virtual models with accurate information. Several illustrations of bounded urban zones corresponding to Spanish urban squares are given. The automatic identification of dominant planes in clouds of points reduces in a drastic way the volume of original clouds of points, and provides inputs for synthetic geometric information, which can be managed by a CAD programs. Transference of information is symbolically managed on geometric primitives, given by dominant planes which are optimally fitted with respect to the original clouds of points. An intensive hand-held work is performed for VR-based models with some application to the inside of a singular building inside the urban environment. Methodology for registration, integration and post-processing developed in this paper is flexible enough to be adapted to another bounded environments, and will be develop din the near future.

Digital acquisition, processing and visualization of archaeological sites require increasing performance for software tools. The application of hybrid methodologies based on digital information poses new challenges for satisfying professional and entertainment requirements, helping to have a better understanding of archaeological sites. A faithful representation of the current state is displayed by combining high resolution photogrammetric recording with Computer Vision to provide an accurate 3D model of the archaeological site. The aim of this work is to construct a 3D model for the roman theatre of Clvnia, a very large archaeological site to provide an assessment about conservation and restoration policy. To achieve it, a feedback between bottom-up approach for processing and top-down for visualizing is performed from dense clouds of 3D points captured with an ILRIS 3D scanner of Optech. The superposition of meshes and maps of level curves provides friendly visualizations with a low cost. In our approach, slices of clouds of 3D points are exported to CAD for cartographic, planimetric and visualization purposes, including Digital Elevation Maps of the archaeological site. Fitting of geometric primitives is semi-automatically performed in an interactive way. A Virtual Reality module is developed for adapting exported slices of laser scanning files and for obtaining a realistic rendering. The hybrid methodology developed in this work is enough flexible to be adapted to another environments, including urban scenarios or isolated buildings in Cultural Heritage surveying./

URBAN LASERMETRY. PROBLEMS AND RESULTS FOR SURVEYING URBAN

Laser recording applied to urban centres provides a key tool for surveying and recovering the global geometry of historical centres. The application of laser devices provides three-dimensional models including architectonic and urban parameters, which are meaningful for buildings and urban typologies, and morphological analysis relative to the shape and dimension of public spaces. In this work we have developed a ground-based static laser-based methodology for robust and accurate 3D urban modelling of historical centres, based on coarse discrete 3D models from which we generate robust piecewise-linear and accurate piecewise-smooth models. Our main contributions are related locally with the compatibility between syntactic architectural elements and their semantic insertion in urban tissue and, globally, with the management of very large data and the semi-automatic identification of structural elements involving the urban and architectural morphology. The feedback between both local and global aspects is solved by designing a specific symbolic representation given by a topological graph, which is automatically generated from a lecture of planar cartographic representation. The graph provides a support for a memory management of high complexity. We have applied this approach for a laser surveying based on an ILRIS 3D (Optech) of large urban environments with historical contents, helping to understand the articulation of central urban spaces six centuries ago. Nevertheless the strong differences, it is possible to identify common syntactic elements helping to understand the articulation between urban spaces and to interpret urban environments with similar functionalities../

Multi-resolution surveying is a topic with increasing interest for information management and visualization of Cultural Heritage. Highly ornamented façades provide a challenge for testing integration of techniques to different resolutions. In this work we develop two strategies based on high resolution digital photogrammetry and 3D laser scanning for architectural and sculptural surveying of complex façades of highly ornamented religious buildings including late gothic and early renaissance elements. We review some recent work related with the façade surveying of several buildings (San Gregorio, San Pablo, Santa María del Campo) with gothic and renaissance elements. All of them present a very high complexity from the ornamental viewpoint. Traditional stereo restitution has been applied for architectural and sculptural surveying but with a very high human work cost and high expertise. A substantial reduction is achieved with the application of laser scanning. Image-based models of the façade of highly ornamented façades allow to identify structural elements, and decompose it in smaller pieces for simplifying the computer management. In particular, structural elements provide a regional segmentation based on high resolution image-range photogrammetry which can be lifted to scan files. In some cases, range-scanning approach is based on Minolta 910 for very close range and, more generally, with ILRIS 3d (Optech) for global scans. Fusion of local and global geometric information can be performed even under very bad illumination conditions. The interplay between ornamental and structural aspects improves the understanding of the building, and contributes in an essential way to the geometric modelling, computer management and architectural interpretation of other similar buildings presenting a similar high complexity for ornamental details../

A COARSE-TO-FINE CURVED APPROACH TO 3D SURVEYING

Laser-based surveying of 3D curved objects is based on discrete clouds of points. Ordering such clouds of points simplifies the computer data management, but can increase troubles when misleading surfaces are superimposed to 3D objects. An evaluation of adaptive goodness-of-fit is need to bound errors and to maintain the model fidelity to the object to be surveyed. Unordered or ordered clouds of points pose different grouping strategies for the computer information management. In this work, we address an ordering scheme induced by curvature variation. The main contribution of this paper concerns the management of volumetric information of curved objects in terms of several curvature maps. A coarse-to-fine approach is developed with a concavity-convexity map, an automatic grouping around “typical” values of Gauss curvature, allowing bounded variations, and finally, the design of intelligent meshing algorithms adapted to the curvature. An additional contribution of this work concerns to the identification of error sources for geometric propagation models, and how to avoid them by using data fusion. An interface is developed for superimposing local results arising from different 3D laser scanning devices on local aspects arising from a global coarse model of several richly ornamented Spanish buildings of the late gothic and the early renaissance style. Maps of curvature provide a coarse-to-fine management of sculptures contained in a small pilot zone of the façade, which is compatible with three resolution levels. Occluded zones for 3D scanning laser is balanced with the insertion of high-resolution views on the 3D model tied by 3D control points. Integration of 3D data in digital photogrammetry is a challenge in solid object modelling and visualization of large scale scenes. Geometric primitives are need for a robust management of large reduced scenes, and an accurate visualization based on dense information is required for specific complex regions. Two complementary strategies for the fusion of high resolution digital photogrammetry and laser scan are developed in this paper. The first one is oriented towards the generation of a 3D geometric model based on a dense depth map linked to a large number of images. The second one is oriented towards the management of the whole 3D scene with an intelligent decreasing of the file size adapted to expected primitives. Our contribution is linked to the automatic identification of geometric primitives, adaptation of warping techniques and the development of a voxelization with two levels of detail. On the way, we develop some interfaces for the management of 3D information from CAD models and the connection between unordered clouds of points and GIS data, relative to the environment with common geometric CAD primitives supported on 2D and 3D information. We illustrate this hybrid approach with the surveying of a Spanish medieval castle (Trigueros del Valle, Valladolid) and a small chapel of the first gothic style in the monastere of Santa Maria de Valbuena (Valladolid), including a fusion of discrete clouds of points captured with triangulation and time-of-flight 3d lasers. /

¿Se puede ir aún más lejos en el camino? ¿Se puede desear algo más completo en cuanto a representación gráfica de la arquitectura-escultura que la imagen sólida del momento? Nosotros creemos que sí. Y nuestro reto siguiente es lograr “vestir” el modelo geométrico con su “ropa” más vieja. Utilizando las fotografías más antiguas de que puede disponerse, o todo un historial fotográfico del objeto, pueden obtenerse modelos históricos de la evolución de la forma. Esto podría significar el logro del dibujo, ya no de algo que no vemos, sino de aquello que ni siquiera podríamos ver porque ya no existe o ha cambiado. Una última reflexión no exenta de humor: el escáner es un sensor activo porque emite las ondas que le permiten “ver” o “palpar” el objeto; se trata de una radiación del espectro no visible para nosotros… de hecho funciona perfectamente a oscuras /

A Multi-Input-Multi-Output (MIMO) Approach for the information management of squares in historical urban centres

The high complexity of the rehabilitation analysis of city centres requires a flexible multi-input and multi-output (MIMO) approach able to support the information arising from different sensors/techniques and to provide different levels of information to users with different requirements. In this paper, a MIMO approach to the capture, analysis and visualization of architectural heritage is addressed under a common support provided by a 3D time of flight (TOF) laser scanning system. The volumetric map generated by a 3D laser poses some interesting challenges for the information management. Indeed, different sensors in the capture stage and different requirements in the analysis or publication stage require a multilayered and multiresolution approach. A multilayered approach is necessary to satisfy metric, geometric, architectural and topographic constraints. A multiresolution approach helps in dealing with the limitation in computer visualization of large graphic files or models. Our approach combines a low-level compression for clouds of points in early processing and rendering, a simplification of volumetric data in intermediate stages for the adjustment to meaningful architectural elements, and an approximation to original refined meshes in final display for the incorporation of ornamental details. We illustrate our approach with an overview of several applications related to a visualization of recent modifications in the Plaza Mayor of Valladolid./

The documentation of a site such as a Roman aqueduct offers an excellent opportunity for testing the application of software resources and techniques which are usually applied on civil works and modern cartography. The linearity of this monument allows a very structured and systematic information management. We present a graphic documentary work which is part of a bigger project aimed at the consolidation, restoring and illumination of the aqueduct. This work serves as a basis for all of the involved sub-studies regarding lithology, archaeological analysis, rock and fabrics tests, and structural analysis. It also acts as the graphic support for thematic maps related to biological colonisation, vandalic attacks (graffiti) and other pathologies, history of restorations, etc. /

Se trata de poner a prueba un sistema informático estándar, aplicado a la gestión de un amplio espectro de documentación, de naturaleza y procedencia diversa, generada en los actuales procesos de estudio de la arquitectura histórica. La evaluación de su respuesta como instrumento de articulación e interconexión de datos, permite resumir las siguientes características o valores probados en el sistema: -Incorporación, sin pérdida de datos, todo tipo de documentos relacionados con el edificio, pudiendo utilizar aquellos programas informáticos empleados para generarlos. -Admisión de su ampliación y modificación on line, su consulta selectiva y produce diferentes salidas. -Posibilidad de manejo inmediato por los diferentes usuarios, incluso no expertos, bien por su facilidad e inmediatez, bien por emplear sistemas conocidos. Desde estas valoraciones el reto que se plantea es la sistematización del método de trabajo, de manera que se demuestre válida para su aplicación a una variedad significativa de modelos de diversa tipología y entidad; por tanto poder formular una propuesta metodológica sistematizada de gestión integrada de datos, en el campo de la documentación del patrimonio arquitectónico.

La ruina de los edificios que no han sido recuperados, supone un hecho lamentablemente inevitable, pero la pérdida de la memoria histórica, supone una irresponsabilidad irreparable. Resulta conocido que en Castilla y León poseemos un rico y variado patrimonio arquitectónico que hay que revitalizar, esto supone en cualquier caso, un elevado grado de documentación científica, que pueda permitir no sólo parar, sino también retrotraer, cualquier proceso de degradación cultural. Sin embargo, nosotros somos optimistas, existe ya una concienciación social sobre el valor de nuestro patrimonio -independientemente del estado de conservación o del grado de reutilización-, y poseemos los medios técnicos y científicos suficientes para documentar eficazmente aquello que deseemos conservar –aunque sea en la memoria-. Nosotros tenemos la sensación de que vamos progresando sobre todo en dos aspectos: en la confianza de que vamos por buen camino recuperando nuestra memoria cultural y en la creencia de que los esfuerzos compartidos nos saben mejor /

To graphicaly document the historic architectural heritage demands the elaboration of editable and growable records which allow continous update and multiple usages. Those coming from their publication as they are to their use as a work basis to develop an intervention project. In this sense, the digital technology offers wide possibilities like various data sources sharing and exchanging. It is needed to establish the degree of participation of each method implied in a documentary project in orde to arrange the best suitable process, not only for economic reasons but also to find the most proffitable way in terms of data contribution. Survey readings with theodolite, combined with tape measurement works quite fine to obtain floor plans, while digital restitution based uppon survey control gives the best way to obtain precise volumes definition. Finaly, rectified images of the wall faces can easyly provide elevation side plans, giving besides valuable information about materials, damages, and preservation state of the façades. All these assessments have been considered when we faced the problem which is to document such relevant and complex building as it is a cistercian monastery, and brough us to formulate a working mode proposal./

STUDY, ANALYSIS AND EVALUATION OF SEVERAL PHOTOGRAMMETRIC METHODS APPLIED TO THE PORTAL OF THE CATHEDRAL OF PALENCIA (SPAIN)

The aim of this paper is to evaluate the effectiveness of the restitution-documentation systems used for an specific architectural object by the Laboratory of Architectural Photogrammetry of the University of Valladolid. The architectural object consists of a monumental main front of the cathedral of Palencia (Spain), an example that conjugates a relatively simple global geometry, with a sophisticated decoration. This example is, however, not particularly favourable to any of the systems used. The obtained results include an architectural canonical mapping (plan, front elevation and sections); a three-dimensional restitution and photographic documents. These are the different methods used: 1.- Analytic restitution with ADAM MPS2 stereoplotter. 2.- Analytic restitution with LEICA SD 2000 stereoplotter. 3.- Digital restitution and photographic rectification with PICTRAN D. 4.- Photographic rectification with MICROSTATION-DESCARTES. It is understood that some of the above mentioned methods cannot be applied to some of the desired final outputs. The purpose of this task is not to go deep into the mathematical and analytic procedures which make possible the development of these techniques, but instead, it is to check the performance of the different systems available for our Laboratory from an experimental point of view. All restitutors will be compared to each other, and also to the results obtained by other systems such as the rectification programs. The time required for the formation of the three-dimensional mesh, as well as for the restitution process itself, will be compared. The visualisation quality and, in general, the degree of complexity of the process will be compared as well. The work concludes with the graphic presentation of the results and with a report which will include all the obtained results together with an adequate evaluation of the same. /
